Mill Hops!
I had to test out a few things on my camera the other day, so Coulten obliged me and popped some ollies over the hip. That’s about head high for him!

Last week was my friend Ami’s birthday and to celebrate we went on a tour of the Wild Rose Brewery- If you have a group of 10 or more people, you can call and schedule a private tour of Calgary’s best micro brewery hosted by one of the overly knowledgeable Wild Rose staff. The cost is $10.00 per person and includes a half pint of beer and a free pint glass to take home with you.
BUT- possibly the best thing about Wild Rose is their PIGS! You can buy a specially designed mini keg of any of the beers Wild Rose brews to take home with you! The cost is $50.00 per pig and is equal to about 25 bottles of beer- Brewed in small batches so every pig has the freshest of beer inside. Better still, every one of their 1,200 pigs are named! Have a look at our (now empty) friend Guido!

I know. It’s still winter, Calgary drivers are *special*, and your bike has a flat tire, but have no fear, Bike to Work Day is here! This Friday, May 1st, 2009, is Calgary’s official Bike to Work Day!
“Bike to Work Day is the vision and passion of Balbi and Company to provide a fun framework for you, your friends and colleagues to join in cycling to work.
Please join thousands of area commuters for a celebration of cycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work! Meet up with your neighbors at one of 5 Pedal Energy Stations located at the main entry points into downtown Calgary. Stop for refreshments, information and a check up with Dr Bike.
Help Calgary become a better place to ride. It is also a unique way to create an awareness of the benefits of cycling as a healthy, efficient, convenient, low-cost means of transport which contributes to a reduction in the major problems of inner city traffic congestion and pollution.
Bike to Work Day is a FREE event and open to all area commuters!
Tell everyone at your workplace about Bike To Work Day.”

The Calgary Flames season ended last night with a 4-1 lose to the Chicago Blackhawks, and a 4 games to 2 series loose to eliminate them from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With a season that included sloppy seconds blasts, a few unfortunate injuries, and the emergence of some new heros its hard to figure out where it all went wrong for the boys in red, black, and yellow. Never the less they entertained us through a cold, snowy Calgary winter and leave us saying what we have been saying for the past 4 seasons, we’ll do better next year.
Typographica’s favorite typefaces of 2008 selected the ‘Calgary Script’ which was “Inspired by the Americana-style lettering on a welcome sign in the terminal at Calgary International Airport.” The type is designed by Alejandro Paul who currently lives in Argentina but from what I gather he worked for Veer here in town.
Today and tomorrow (Sunday) the Calgary Expo is taking place at the roundup center. The Calgary Expo is similar to the famous Comic Con but obviously smaller. The guest list is fairly impressive with ‘stars’ like Larry Thomas, the Soup Nazi from Seinfield:
Check out their website http://calgaryexpo.com for more information about guests, prices, and times.

Jerre Paquette is a Film Studies teacher at Mount Royal and for the past few years he’s been hosting the Jerre Awards to showcase some of the short films made by students in his class. This year, students will be mixing genres together (ex. Sci-Fi/Queer), which should make for some pretty weird movies up on the big screen. CBC caught on to the event and decided to sponsor the awards and will be giving one student 1500 dollars for a script writing contest they put together with Mr. Paquette. All in all, this should be an entertaining time, with an after party at Julio’s Barrio! And it’s free!
