Let’s Change Calgary’s Backyard Ramp By-law

July 31, 2009

via the Calgary Association of Skateboard Enthusiasts

Backyard Ramp

“If you haven’t seen the news or heard the story of a fellow Calgarian losing his back yard ramp to the city’s bylaw, here is an update for you.

The current by-law regarding back yard ramps is outdated and definitely unaccommodating to any citizen who has the opportunity to own their own back yard ramp. It states simply that any skateboard ramp is not allowed on any parcel of land within the City of Calgary, period.

We are hoping to change this by-law, and we need all of your help to do so. This in not going to be a quick fix, but hopefully we can make a differnce.

We ask that anyone who has an opion on this matter, please write your alderman to bring this matter to the table. The greater the response to this, the more chance at success we have.

This link will provide you with a mail site for the alderman, and hopefully this will change soon.

If anyone needs assistance with this, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks for your support.”

July 31, 2009

Working at a skateboard shop, I get to see a lot of different people in a day. They often stay for a long time, like Mac and Ben yesterday.

Choose yer own!

July 31, 2009

I came across this on facebook today and got pretty stoked!

scan00021

‘Choose Yer Own is a festival based on sweet adventure, and built around a love for Calgary and the many great projects that happen here. Choose Yer Own is a collaborative festival. Anybody can put anything on, which means the festival is always unpredictable and surprising. The festival tries to use unusual venues that are all within biking distance of one another, encouraging exploration and interaction with the city.’

One of Choose Yer Own’s upcoming events is PathwayPedalPotluck- A bike ride through the city to an undisclosed location where a vegetarian potluck, BBQ and bocceball match (? is it called a match?) will take place. Saturday August 15th at 2:00pm- Meet at the Eau Claire Market Square with a reusuable plate, cutlery, BBQ items (again, preferable vegetarian) and potluck item to share- It’s sure to be a GREAT time!

Newspaper Recycling – Success!

July 30, 2009

It’s been just over a year since the “Clean to the Core” newspaper recycling pilot project was launched. The program installed 40 newspaper recycling bins along 7th Avenue and nearby blocks, with the goal of diverting newspapers from the city landfills. The bins collected over 40,000 kg of recycled newspaper according to the project organizers, Centre City Implementation Group.

The success of the project has lead Centre City to shift the project to a new operational practice, meaning these bins will now be a permanent feature in Calgary.

The Sun has a good article on this project, and Centre City blog has more details for you as well:

Calgary tour de nuit Society

July 28, 2009

cgy

The Calgary tour de nuit Society is hosting their first “Ride the Road” Bike Tour and Festival on August 23rd, 2009.

Inspired by the City of Montreal’s annual evening street ride that attracts more than 12,000 riders, the Calgary tour de nuit Society formed in early 2009 as a promotion group for bicycle commuting in Calgary. Our programming strives to highlight the impact of single-occupant motor vehicle commuting on inner city suburbs and the need for improved infrastructure in Calgary dedicated to safe and efficient bike commuting.

For the first time ever, the streets of Calgary will come alive with the hum of bicycle wheels on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 23 as all cyclists are invited to take part in a leisurely (or not) 14-kilometre ‘Ride the Road’ Tour -an on-street, closed-road ride through the inner city to raise awareness about the advantages of pedal powered transportation.  Afterwards, there will be a community-oriented bike fair.

There is a $10.00 registration fee or family passes are available for $25.00. To register or get involved, email info@morepeoplecycling.ca.
