Greg Macpherson Live at the Marquee Room

March 30, 2010

The brilliant song writer of Winnipeg will be making an appearance in cgy Wednesday night at the Marquee.  Doors 8pm, Tickets will be avail at the door for $12.00

Greg MacPherson’s music punches it’s fist to the sky in joy and anger while the other flips through a people’s history of labour and love.  His new album, Mr. Invitation (Press Release)

‘It’s not about wanting to go back to the good old days, but it is about needing the thrill of having someone’s music be raw and honest, without all of the shine smeared all over it. It’s the thrill of sensing the real person behind the voice of a Joe Strummer or a Johnny Cash, that’s the real pearl.’

blog your dog – dingo!

March 30, 2010

Got an awesome dog? EMAIL in their name, breed, favorite treats, other information you want to include and pictures to have your pal featured on CalgaryisAwesome!

Today’s dog featured on BLOG YOUR DOG is Nera’s BFF- Dingo! Here is what they have to say about him:

blogyourdog5 NAME: Dingo
BREED: Blue Heeler/ Retriever Cross
FAVORITE SNACK: Anything
OTHER INFO: Dingo loves to eat.  Anything and everything.  He makes sure he gets his breakfast at 7:30 am and 6 pm with poking and pawing if necessary.  He will starve to death if he is not fed exactly on time or earlier.  Grazing in the gutter is also acceptable. One of his most favourite things is to visit the CSIF and eat popcorn off the floor.  It helps that there are gophers to chase too…  he has refined his gopher-chasing tactics to running at them full blast (which is not really very fast).  His other favourite thing is to snuggle like crazy – he’s convinced that he is a lap dog and insists on fitting himself into my lap (not an easy feat for a dog that weighs 36kg).

Portobello West Giveaway

March 29, 2010

Inspired by the famous, long established European markets, Portobello West was created to provide a low-cost venue for local artists and designers to show and sell their goods directly to the public. Originally a monthly market in Vancouver, the concept proved immensely popular and is now a regular event in Calgary and Toronto (where it is known as Portobello East).

The Calgary event will be taking place on April 9, 10, and 11 at the Big Four building at Stampede Park.  Admission is $5 and can be paid at the door.

For information on the designers that will be on the grounds, check out www.portobellowest.com.

GIVEAWAY! We have passes  to check out Portobello West next weekend. Drop us a line and let us know what spring fashion trend you are most looking forward to at iaseto[at]gmail.com.

While Alberta Fashion Week may be over, you can still get your style fix by checking out CONGLOMERATE Magazine – Canada’s first fashion week magazine. The publication is the first of its kind in Canada concentrating on fashion week events across the nation.  Launched in Calgary in 2009, CONGLOMERATE covers all aspects of a city’s fashion week including designer reviews and profiles, trend features, editorial spreads, local news, artist features, store reviews, street style highlights, and avant-garde short films.

The first issue is now available online and features stories on local designer Caitlin Power, Mission clothing favorite Coco & Violet and Project Runway winner Evan Biddell.

All this and more can be found at www.conglomeratemag.com.

Jason Collett Ticket Giveaway

March 29, 2010

Hey Calgary, we really like you, and to show it we are going to do an awesome ticket giveaway.  The very talented Jason Collett will be playing the Royal Canadian Legion#1 on April 1st and we are sending two lucky people to this event.  All you gotta do, is email events@calgaryisawesome.com, with your name, number and a scientific fact about music!

***Remember to bring your ID’s to this event

Toronto, Ontario artists Jason Collett, Zeus and Bahamas have announced a North American revue tour featuring all three artists performing together and alone during a night long set of incredible music.  The three acts have a long history of collaboration, as intertwined as their musical lineage. Instead of the typical show in which each act plays its own set, Collett, Zeus and Bahamas will all take the stage together, playing songs by all three.  At times you will find Collett strumming softly on the guitar alone; Zeus pounding out their rich pop numbers; or Bahamas melting the rocks in your glass; then find them all back together again in full force.  The energy, the creativity, the inherent knowledge each musician brings to the stage, of their fellow musician, will make for a unique and exciting night, each and every night along the tour. SHOT AT THE DARK – LAB COAST

March 29, 2010

There’s a moment at night, when you lie down to sleep, that takes place just before you start dreaming, where ideas jump out from every pore, and the world around you seems a little different. A delicate state, that a sudden interruption, or lack of a pen can kill that idea off forever.

It seems that a jam session in the middle of the night, where some people are in their deepest of dreams, Lab Coast is creating one. With a sound much different than any of our other guests on the show, the amazingly orchestrated experimental music of Chris Dadge, David Laing, Scott Munro, and Shawn Dicey is a sound that easily turned a foggy tired eyed night, into somewhat of a hallucination.

These dark tunnels, with the distorted sounds of this local Calgary group, definitely do not define where this band is going. With their recently released cd, and ever growing library of instruments and recordings, Lab Coast is creating a sound that looms like our dreams; something we may never understand how they did it, but walk about our days yearning to be back within them.

SHOT AT THE DARK is proud to present Lab Coast.

Thank you so much to Lab Coast, for the adventurous night.

Thank you again for watching.

SHOT AT THE DARK is produced by Reuben Bullock, Justin Huculak, and Brock Mitchell.
