K’naan will be at the MacEwan Hall on Sept 27 and you could be too!  Email justin@calgaryisawesome.com with your name/number and the secret to Bieber’s success and you shall be entered into our ticket giveaway draw!

Since the release of “Waving Flag”, K’naan has been unstoppable. DIY: àlalá dreams on

August 31, 2010

Designer: Adejoke Taiwo
Fashion House: àlalá
www.adejoke.com

Being on television has given fashion designer Adejoke Taiwo plenty of great exposure, but it has also come with a few pitfalls. “People will call me wanting designer outfits and fancy ball gowns made in one day. I can make it in one day but it will have staples and hot glue in it,” she jokes.

As are the unrealistic expectations that have come from her appearance on last season’s reality show competition, Project Runway Canada. Not only did Adejoke have to make complete fashion pieces in one day, the show threw the competitors curve-balls with unusual assignments like creating dresses out of post-it notes and concocting evening wear out of camping tents. The long hours and gruelling pace of the challenges took its toll on the young designer.

We Are Scientists ticket giveaway!

August 30, 2010

Come on Come all, join the frenzy for this awesome ticket giveaway.  Email justin@calgaryisawesome.com with your name, number and the whereabouts of Waldo and we will hook you up with some sweet tickets if yours is the winning entry!!

For their first time in Calgary, WE ARE SCIENTISTS are coming to the REPUBLIK NIGHTCLUB to celebrate the LABOUR DAY LONG WEEKEND.  Coming along for the ride will be Vancouver’s BEND SINISTER and Winnipeg’s THE REASON.

We Are Scientists shocked themselves and impressed many others with their 2005 debut With Love & Squalor, which sold over 100,000 copies in the UK on the strength of dancefloor standbys Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt; It’s A Hit; and The Great Escape, as well as nine other songs that, to all appearances, people also liked. Twenty months of near-constant touring culminated in a sold out UK tour, including two nights at Brixton Academy, in the Fall of 2006, plus a very pleasant Christmas.  (Union Press Release)

SHOT AT THE DARK – The Magician and the Gates of Love

August 30, 2010

Time can heal all things. Letting the second hand spin into minutes, into hours, into days. Allowing our hearts, our own self guilt, our morality catch up on one another, and see all troubles pass. It’s in this time that music can facilitate in healing. It’s specific songs that help people grasp onto for strength, and help. Songs that communicate deeper than a tap of our foot.

The Magician, Nathan Moes, and the Gates of Love, Conrad Dykman, Nick Koole, Andrew Koole, and Josh Daignault, have taken the sorrow of this wandering heart, and created something we can all rely on for hope. With the melody of time, and instruments of all trades, this band has made a spectacle that changed a tiny bistro, into a place of power and healing.

The Magician, and the Gates of Love, have been travelling across the Country with our friend Jordan Klassen. A tour that swept through the radio waves, and venues. Congratulations you guys on all your hard work this year. Your music changes people in a way time cannot.

So please welcome our friends to one of our favorite episodes of SHOT AT THE DARK, The Magician, and the Gates of Love.

Thank you so much to everyone for becoming a part of the show. Nathan, Conrad, Nick, Andrew, and Josh, this was one of the greatest performances I have been a part of, so thank you.

Thank you to Jordan Klassen, for lining us up. Thank you to Suzanne, and Angie, of Jacqueline Suzanne’s Bistro.

Thank you all for watching.

SHOT AT THE DARK is produced by Nicole Irene Dyck, Reueben Bullock, Justin Huculak, and Brock Mitchell.

Tasty Highlights of Calgary

August 29, 2010

Food + sun + festival = a great time.  I hit up Taste of Calgary on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon – a good omen considering the rainy summer we have endured thus far.  For those who couldn’t make it down to the event a few weeks ago, here are a few highlights that caught my hungry eye and made my taste buds happy. Armed with a stack of tickets, my friend and I set off to find the tastiest treasures our tummies could seek.

Chow Down in Cowtown – Red’s Diner

August 29, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Poached Eggs @ Red's Diner

I’d been curious about Red’s Diner ever since I saw them renovating the former chiropractic clinic after my tap classes at DJD. Since it opened in the spring, my perennial brunchmate Tiffany and I had always meant to go, but we didn’t make it happen until yesterday.

Read Comics in Public Day

August 28, 2010

Today is International Read Comics in Public Day. Pretty self-explanatory: grab your favorite comic book and hit the streets whether that be at the park, at the library, on the C-train, or anywhere else you happen to be at in Calgary.

The only caveat: If someone asks you what you are reading, don’t say a “graphic novel”. Be proud of your comic love.
