Chow Down in Cowtown – Global Vegetarian Night @ Higher Ground Café

October 31, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Reservation for Vincinni @ Higher Ground

Higher Ground and I actually go way back – as a high school student at nearby Queen E, I would often go during my spares for an apple-berry tea or soup. In a weird twist of fate, I met one of their managers, Dan Clapson, through the Calgary Food Blogger Bake Sale back in June (he made the very-popular London Fog cookies!) His blog, Dan’s Good Side, features lots of yummy recipes interspersed with restaurant reviews and interviews for Food Network Canada, as well as quick posts about his favourite musicians. Dan was kind enough to invite me to have one of his Global Vegetarian Night meals at Higher Ground on the house! (So yes, this review may be a little biased.)

Due Date Contest

October 28, 2010

“I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack… it grew by one.”

If you loved The Hangover‘s Zach Galifianakis as much as I did, then you’ll want to check out his new wolf pack with Robert Downey Jr. in the  zany new comedy Due Date. The two funnymen play a pair of unlikely companions, thrown together for a cross-country road trip they will never forget. Cars will be destroyed, nerves will be frayed and hilarity will ensue.

Calgary is Awesome is giving one lucky reader the chance to catch the advanced screening of this film taking place Wednesday, November 3rd at 7PM at the Scotiabank Chinook Theatre. All you have to do is let us know about your craziest road trip story. No flat tire or bad weather tales; we want to hear about the really absurd and memorable driving trips. Send your answers to irene.calgaryisawesome@gmail.com for your chance to win. Good luck!

For more chances to win, be sure to visit the Warner Bros Calgary Facebook group page.

DOCSOUP: Waking Sleeping Beauty

October 28, 2010

The second screening in the annual Docsoup series is called Waking Sleeping Beauty, and it’s no fairytale.

Director Don Hahn brings to life the perfect storm, a whirlwind of people and circumstances that changed the face of animation forever. It’s a true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits over a 10-year period. This film offers a fascinating and candid perspective of what happened within the creative ranks set against corporate tensions amongst Disney’s executives.

Showing Wednesday, November 3rd 2010 @ the Plaza Theater, 7 pm.

Circa presents this weekend “Dudebuggy”!!!

October 26, 2010

Come down to the HIFI this weekend and check out this amazing group!! Be there by 9pm for all the fun!!

‘We met working in a shipyard in Stolkholm. At the time we were all men, well hung, toned hot bodies, loading the goods onto the boats. The four of us soon realized that there was something more for us in life, we wanted to celebrate by giving the world our music. We wanted to deliver our message as women. So we used all of our savings from the shipyards to undergo numerous serguries on our bodies. As women, we saw the shipyards as our vehicle to come to North America. We used the four months of our journey to learn how to play our instruments and write what are now considered to be legendary songs. for example the songs GOING OFF LIKE DAVID HASSLEHOFF and THESE NUTS PAY THE BILLS were written in the gallows of our ship. As women we explored with one another our sexuality. Fueled on Swedish whiskey and demoral we inserted ourselves into one another. By the time we got to North America we were a well tuned rock machine. We toured for six months without any shows. There was only one city in the world that could understand the feminine nature of our riffs. That city is Calgary Alberta.’  (Dudebuggy Bio)

Chow Down in Cowtown – Bumpy’s Café

October 24, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Cappuccino @ Bumpy's

My perennial brunchmate Tiffany and I learned the hard way this morning that Holy Grill is closed on Sundays. Undeterred, Tiffany quickly suggested that we head around the corner to Bumpy’s for our brunch fix.

Five Alarm Funk Ticket giveaway!

October 24, 2010

We love you CGY, so here is another passionate gift from us.  Be the 4th person to email justin@calgaryisawesome.com for your chance to win 4x tickets to Five Alarm Funk at the Republik this Wednesday!

Welcome to the sunny shores of Five Alarm Funk, where Anything is Possible. This genre-spanning, groove-straddling third album from the heavy-set funk machine was released in July and it reveals 14 tunes of unbridled energy. The album’s first track, “Infernal Monologue” begins with an angelic children’s choir before quickly moving into classically inspired heavy prog-rock. From there the party gets started with some straight-ahead funk on “Zenith Escalator” before turning to driving world-rhythms and burning middle-eastern inspired horn lines on “Titan.” Influences as diverse as Frank Zappa, Yes, J.S. Bach and Antibalas all make an appearance before Anything is Possible is finished.
