Chow Down in Cowtown – Sushi Motto

December 28, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Flames Roll @ Sushi Motto

I’ve been bitten by the group-buying website bug – Groupon, LivingSocial, TeamBuy, StealTheDeal, SwarmJam, DealFind… I follow them all. It appears that I’m not alone – a recent deal of $20 for a $50 coupon to Sushi Motto saw 4112 vouchers sold within a span of 24 hours! According to Calgary Deals Blog, this made it the top-selling deal in the city thus far. Since my family’s almost always up for some Japanese, I picked up two vouchers of my own and we all went down to check it out.

Amy Seeley – Plum Coulee

December 27, 2010

If you haven’t already, go to Amy Seeley’s Plum Coulee site to purchase 2010′s most spell bounding album. Amy has been featured on SHOT AT THE DARK with the voice and writing that will leave you breathless.

Amy Seeley is definitely in my top 5 of 2010 as someone who has shaped the soundtrack to the most important memories I will ever have.

Chow Down in Cowtown: The Grizzly Paw (Canmore)

December 19, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Chicken Ranch Pizza @ Grizzly Paw Brewery

A few weekends ago, B. surprised me with a weekend getaway to Canmore as a belated non-birthday present (I had asked for nothing for my birthday) as well as some quality do-nothing time before the busy holiday season. Obviously for me the most important part of any trip is what we will be eating, so I sent a call out to the Twitterverse for help. My friend and fellow blogger Cheryl suggested The Grizzly Paw. We hadn’t felt like pub food all weekend, which unfortunately led to a few not-so-good dining experiences, so we finally made it there for brunch on our last day in Canmore. This was a little unfortunate because it was a little too early for us to try the famous Grizzly Paw house-brewed beers and sodas.

Getting you to the NEXT STOP

December 16, 2010

Do you love your iPhone as much as I love mine? If so, you probably love apps and a great new transit tool has just been launched by the folks at mediumrare. The Next Stop app provides upcoming bus times directly to your phone, straight from Calgary Transit.  It’s easy-to-use, and lists the arrival times for your stop in a reader-friendly format (unlike CT’s own dreaded website). It also updates the latest tweets from @Calgary Transit so you can stay up-to-date on any delays or schedule changes.

Find out more about Next Stop at www.calgarytransitschedule.com.

Chow Down in Cowtown – Kingsland Farmers’ Market

December 12, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Kingsland Farmers' Market

I’d missed the boat on Kingsland Farmers’ Market over the summer, so when they finally opened their year-round market on Thursday, I quickly headed over the next day to check it out.

Chow Down in Cowtown – LeVilla

December 5, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

LeVilla Kitchen

LeVilla has been open in my family’s neighbourhood for several years now, but it was never on our radar until my mom saw an advertisement in Trend Weekly, a local Chinese tabloid, advertising their special for November – a four-course prix fixe menu for $39 available on Sunday to Thursday nights. The fact that executive chef Rick Chuk is Chinese and used to work at the 5-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong sealed the deal.

LeVilla ad in Trend Weekly (????)

Clearly their advertising campaign was a success, as when my family and I went out for dinner earlier this week, all but one table of diners were Chinese.

Calgary Zoo Zoolights

December 4, 2010

December in Calgary is cold and chilly. But when the cabin fever sets in, what better reason to get out of the house then to check out some pretty lights.  Lots and lots of them. Zoolights will display over 1.5 million lights and will run until January 2 (excluding Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve) every night from 6-9PM. The Calgary Zoo will also be accepting food bank donations every night and donors will receive a 2-for-1 coupon for Zoo Daytime Admission in the spring time

Buy your tickets and learn more about the family-friendly events taking place at Zoolights on the Calgary Zoo website.

Two Thousand & Ten Portfolio Showcase

December 4, 2010

Nothing is as bittersweet as “The End” of school – no more finals,  never needing to worry about grades ever again and parting ways with the student lifestyle.  But with the end looms the endless possibilities still to come and this MRU graduating class is celebrating their past and decidedly-bright future.  The students in the Graphic Design and Technical Communication program are hosting a public showcase event at the Ironwood Stage & Grill in Inglewood on December 9 from 5-8 PM.  The show will feature student works, a vintage photo booth and a chance to mingle with the new grads and industry folk as well.

Find out more at www.portfolioshowcase2010.ca and follow on Twitter  @portshow2010.
