SHOT AT THE DARK – Beth Branches

March 31, 2011

What would it sound like if the whole world clapped their hands at the same time? Would it one deafening boom that would shake through our ears and into our heads? Or would it be an irregular rhythm with claps coming in waves chopping at the shores of our tolerance.

What if the world’s hearts were to beat to the same tempo? Would our inspiration be drawn from similar places, or would our love last longer?

Everyone is brought into this world with a different beat, a different bounce in their step, that makes us as human unpredictable and powerful.

If everyone was to pound to the same drum, everything would be much too easy, the fragility of love would be lost without the inconsistency. We hold onto what we can because we never know what the next clap is going to bring in the beat, or the next note will bring in a song.

Beth Branches is that irregularity that holds a power and strength in her music, but with a quiver of fragility that makes her song writing both sacred, and endearing. She sings of lost love, but watching her, and listening to her, you learn all too well that she’s already made a second step and moved on as a talented woman of song.

SHOT AT THE DARK (though located in Los Angeles at the moment) is proud to present Beth Branches, in a three part stroll through the beautiful streets in California:

Thank you all so much for watching. Thank you for all the support.

Thank you to Beth for being a part of the show.

Thank you to Novel Cafe for the connections.

SHOT AT THE DARK is produced by Nicole Irene Dyck, Justin Huculak, Reuben Bullock, and Brock Mitchell.

Live @ the Ironwood – Sarah Macdougall & Gordie Tentrees

March 30, 2011

These two amazing artists will be making their way to the Ironwood!! Come on down CGY!

Sarah Macdougall has been a touring internationally for years with her dynamite songs, blistering guitar chops and astounding voice earning rave reviews and topping major music writers top ten album of the year lists as a songwriter, all the while producing and engineering her own albums. 24 hrs Vancouver called her ‘one of the most promising exports out of Sweden since Abba’ and her album Across the Atlantic (2009) got four star reviews in such notable publications as Q magazine, the Irish Times, No Depression, and many more. Her songs have been chosen for onboard entertainment on Lufthansa airplanes, on TV shows, and she’s been a semi-finalist on the International Songwriting competition with her song Crow’s Lament. She has performed on the Bob Harris show in the UK, has played Canadian and International Festivals, performed with Mary Gauthier, Todd Snider, and Po’Girl among others. Sarah is currently working on her new album, which is scheduled for release in the summer of 2011. (Copperspine Records 2011)

Gordie Tentrees is from the cold and rustic Yukon Territory and writes like a doppelganger of the preeminent Texas storytellers on his third album, Mercy or Sin.  “Alfred” leads off the record, a darkly poignant acoustic tale that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Guy Clark album. (“Walks with a hitch, right side hip, reads a dirt palm, right before he spits, thinks on the rain, hollers for the end, Alfred is old his blood ain’t thin.”) But don’t settle in for a languid country/folk songwriter album, because he brings on resophonic guitar and stomp board on a roaring “No Integrity Man.” He was selected by CBC’s Song Quest in 2009 as one of Canada’s top songwriters and hosted the prestigous SOCANsongwriters circle at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. The song “Mercy or Sin” was a finalist in the 2009 International Songwriting Competition out of 15 000 entries. (www.tentress.ca)
