AN ISLAND – a film by Vincent Moon @THE PLAZA

March 23, 2011

An Island is an unconventional music performance film and an abstract documentary about a band and an island. The running time is 50 minutes.
This film challenges the relationship between cinema and music, much like Moon’s Take Away Shows with artists such as Arcade Fire, The National, R.E.M., Sigur Ros, Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes started in 2006.
On February 1, the band and director invited the world to participate in a new, inspiring distribution method for An Island called Private-Public Screenings. The rules are simple: the screening needs to be public, have a minimum capacity of five people and must be free. Since the world premiere in C?sis, Latvia, over 500 people across the globe have hosted screenings both large and small.

Prior to the feature presentation, a selection of Moon’s Take Away Shows will also be shared.

Chow Down in Cowtown – Holy Grill

March 20, 2011

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Holy Grill

Please excuse my two-and-a-half-month-long hiatus. In January, I was getting ready for my trip to China in February/March.

The weekend before we left, B. and I (after a *lot* of research) went to The Camera Store to pick up a new Panasonic Lumix GF1 for our trip (we are *so* happy with it – can’t wait to start sharing some images) as well as some thermal underwear from MEC. We got hungry (obviously) and seeing as how I conveniently had an Entertainment coupon in my purse, we headed over to Holy Grill to grab a bite to eat.

Twestival Calgary

March 17, 2011

So if you aren’t on Twitter, then you don’t tweet, have tweeps, or generally care about what’s going on in the Twitterverse.  But if there is one thing that you should know about, then that is the upcoming Calgary Twestival on Wednesday, March 24th.

A Twestival (Twitter festival) uses social media for good by connecting communities together offline to raise awareness for a good cause.  This year’s Calgary event will be supporting the Making Changes Association, an organization that helps women create promising futures for themselves through the Walk-in Closet program and the Employment and Life Skills program. The Tweet-up will be a fashion fundraiser with all the works: a paparazzi-filled red carpet, a photo booth, and great outfits up for auction. Models will be showing off clothing from the  trendy Espy store in Inglewood and participants will have the chance to bid on items to help out the cause.

Tickets are $15 and available at http://calgary.twestival.com/.  You can also learn more on Twitter @YYCtwestival.

Vintage Spring Fling Pop-Up Shop

March 17, 2011

Spring is in the air! Well, sort of, it is Calgary in March after all.  But when spring does finally get here, you will want some bright and cheery items to add to your wardrobe and household.  Stop on by the Vintage Pop-Up Shop’s Spring Fling event March 24-27 at the Eleven Eleven boutique in Kensington (it’s that red building you walk past on 10th Street all the time).

Hours are 10 am to 8 pm from Thursday – Saturday and then 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday.  If you get a chance to go on the Thursday night, the Shop will have a little bubbly available as well as yummy treats from the Cake Lady. I don’t know who the Cake Lady is, but I know I want some!

Find out more about the Vintage Pop-Up Shop on their Facebook page.
