Chow Down in Cowtown – Tiffin vs. Safari Grill

September 11, 2011

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Anh and Laura @ Safari Grill
Anh and Laura at Safari Grill

My friend Anh *loves* Safari Grill so much that she sometimes goes there multiple times a week. Since I like to pretend that anything in the SE is “far”, I had never heard of the place, let alone been there, but made a mental note to go someday…

As Anh continued to gush about Safari Grill on Twitter, along came a dissenter.

“Tiffin is WAY better than Safari Grill!” Mason declared. Anh couldn’t fathom how any place could be better than Safari Grill, so she organized an eat-off, and invited some of her foodie friends (including me) to play. We managed to hit both places in one night as they are conveniently located kitty-corner from each other on 28th Street, just off of Memorial Drive.

PARKSALE – Promoting Artists, Redefining Kulture

September 8, 2011

PARKSALE 2011!

PARK – ‘Promoting Artists, Redefining Kulture’ – a network organized by a group of young Calgarian artists to promote and support fellow emerging artists in the community.  PARKSALE is an outdoor market (in the park!) where you will find artists selling and showcasing their art.  Hand-in-hand with the sale of art will be LIVE music and a variety of interactive installations.  The city is growing, and PARK is excited to step up and take an active role in helping and shaping how culture will grow in urban Calgary!

“It is often challenging for many young artists to find spaces where they can make their first impressions without having to pay an expensive vendors fee or a high percentage of commission. In order for culture to grow, we need collective spaces where young artists can participate in our city’s blooming culture and creative communities,” says Kara Chomistek, Co-founder and President of PARK.  All costs for the PARKSALE are covered by PARK.

The event is hosted in a green space with low impact installation, and focus’ on local artists and sustainable and recycled fashion. They are conscious of how important it is to sustain not only our creative environment, but our physical one as well.

PARKSALE is a FREE event happening on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 at the U of C’s  North Campus (the green space between the Engineering and ICT faculties) from 10AM to 5PM.  Free Popsicles for those of you who get there early!!!!

September 2, 2011

The annual Pride Calgary parade is an opportunity for people of all genders, sexual orientations, cultures and backgrounds to unite and march together for the cause of human rights. This year’s parade will see the mayor of Calgary participate for the first time (go Nenshi!) and will culminate in a street festival at the end of the route.

The parade kickoff is this Sunday at noon in Olympic Plaza. The parade route heads west along Stephen Avenue ending at Shaw Millennium Park where the street festival begins. Get in costume, dress up in your rainbow colors, or simply come as yourself to participate.
