HPRodeo – The Eviction of Stuart Block: This is My City

January 5, 2012

On 7th Avenue SW, off the C-Train tracks, sits a century-old building known as the Stuart Block. Over the years, it’s been home to the most eclectic gathering of Calgarians imaginable… but now, it sits empty.

Stuart Block was built in 1911 by T. R. Stuart and originally housed the T. R. Stuart & Co. Hardware Store. The upper two floors remain divided into apartments.  The building is designed in the Edwardian Commercial style with ground level retail and two levels of apartments above. The retail storefront has been completely modified, but it retains a recessed entrance typical of the original design.

Returning to the High Performance Rodeo, This Is My City unites a collective of professional artists and homeless Calgarians to explore a hundred years of evictions in this new, live radio play.

Listen to the stories of Stuart Block residents experiencing the last few minutes in their homes before being evicted, celebrating their time in the space and mourning its loss. This unique creation explores the timeless theme of house and home, through comedy, drama and music.

The Eviction of Stuart Block is part of the This Is My City Festival and High Performance Rodeo and can be experienced at the John Dutton Theatre, Central Library, January 5th, 7pm and it’s Pay What You Can.

Reuben Bullock – CD Release Show

January 4, 2012

Calgary’s Reuben Bullock is a hard worker. A singer-songwriter, Reuben ‘finds ways of translating the confusing language of emotion into song and melody, without ever defining it or answering its questions. He sings with passion and certainty beyond his years.’

We caught up with Reuben a couple of days ago, in anticipation of his CD Release Show for man made lakes:

You’ve been touring quite a bit over the last couple of months. British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Mexico. Do you have any tales from the road that you want to share with us?

Yeah, we have just been trying to get out there. The September tour was my first time on the road.  It was a good taste, we did a good part of Western Canada. This January we start another tour, then spring is going to be a coast to coast….hopefully with a lot of festival dates.  Mexico wasn’t intended to be a part of a tour, it just turned out to be. I was there by myself and it just kind of happened.  It went well though, lots of people and great feedback.

Chow Down in Cowtown – Jelly Modern Doughnuts

January 1, 2012

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Jelly Modern Doughnuts

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a restful holiday and are ready for another year of eating with me!

Just before 2011 came to a close, my friend Yen Yi and I decided to finally make our way down to Jelly Modern Doughnuts. We were greeted by a bright, modern, white and pink space, accented with bamboo. Their Christmas decorations – including a giant pink-and-white “gingerbread” house – were still up, but because they kept with the colour scheme of the shop, it made the whole café seem more fun and whimsical, rather than weighed down and kitschy. And of course there was the centrepiece, the giant glass case of doughnuts.
