BBQ and Cosplay, Get Ready for Geekmoot 2.0
One of the nerd stereotypes I’d like to smash is that we hate sunlight and/or the outdoors. I for one love it outside. I also enjoy sports and talking to girls. Thanks ‘Big Bang Theory’, you stereotype factory. Real nerds watch Community, but I digress. We love going outside. Geek Moot is just the kind of incentive to get us there too. This Saturday the second annual Geek Moot BBQ will be a magical gathering of nerds and geeks alike. Taking place from noon til 1 a.m. at the Hillhurst Community Centre, this will be an excellent opportunity to enjoy some free hot dogs and hamburgers as well as nerding out and meeting some new friends.
According to Cory Mcconnachie, one of the events founders, he’s looking forward to building on last years success, “The first one went really well considering we had no idea what would happen. We had about 45-50 people show up which was impressive as we did it at Edworthy park which was not a very easy place to get too.” A great turnout considering the first Geek Moot was thrown together with less than a months notice.
An event like this isn’t just the work of one man, “I have my friends Erik and Robert who have been there from stage one to help out as well as my friend Lance Buan, our artist. My friend Rachel volunteered to help with a website and just recently I’ve started working with a fellow named Jonathan who has experience with sponsors and event planning. Revolution Games will be there as a vendor as well as running the Magic side of things.” says Cory about his team.
Geek Moot 2.0 will feature a DCI sanctioned Magic the Gathering tournament, video games, several boardgames, Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, a cosplay dance with a live DJ and more. Cory is also looking forward to the future, “As long as it goes well this year, we’ll be looking at turning it into a mini-convention and grow it up to be a full fledged con some day as I have never had so much fun as I have at these conventions.”
So if you’re not doing anything this Saturday grab a 20-sided die and some sunscreen and check out the FREE event for yourself at the Hillhurst Community Centre. Check out Geek Moot on Facebook.
