There’s a new party in town staking its claim in the LGBTQ community and it’s a damn Hot Mess. Literally. Blake Spence is on a mission to grow YYC’s LGBTQ party scene and so far he’s on a roll.
Blake along with cohort Sean Tomas Stewart have started a company called Two Beards, dedicated to throwing parties specifically for the gay community. Their first event is called Hot Mess, which kicked off last Saturday and will run once a month until September at The Eagle, Calgary’s only leather bar.
And if you missed Hot Mess, you missed out. Line out the door and sweet, sweet beats all night with a super hot and messy, ready-to-go crowd.
“Calgary has been a bit of a void lately for gay specific venues,” says Blake. “So the idea behind Hot Mess is to create an alternative to the same scene we’ve been going to over and over. It was obvious from the unexpected number of people who came, it’s what we need more of here.”
A few weeks back James Wilt of FFWD magazine, wrote a feature article that looked into why Calgary’s gay bars are rapidly closing and what the community has to say about it. Hot Mess’ current venue, The Eagle itself, will closing in October and as it stands, they’re unsure of relocation. Which in Blake’s words will inevitably make the places to party smaller and less diverse.
“Hot Mess is about inclusively,” says Blake. “There’s been some segregation and in some cases discrimination, felt by certain bars within the LGBTQ. That’s not what we’re [Hot Mess’] about. We’re looking to create an atmosphere where the whole community feels welcome. And everyone dances.”
Blake and Two Beards is also optimistic about the idea of throwing LGBTQ parties at some of the bigger, “straight” clubs in town, made popular by cities like Toronto, Detroit and NYC.
“Once The Eagle closes, we’ll have to find another space,” says Blake. “We want to keep the momentum going from Hot Mess after September and see where it can go.”
If you missed out on last Saturday’s big Hot sweaty Mess, don’t fret! Blake and Sean will be back at The Eagle in August, date to be released in the very near future. So gals and pals, get out your dancing shoes and something breathable, because Hot Mess is guaranteed to live up to its name.
