Science is awesome. Can we take a second to recap the last couple of months in the world of science? First the gang over at CERN, using their Large Hadron Collider, are pretty certain they finally discovered the Higgs Boson. No big deal, it’s just the particle that explains why stuff exists. Then we landed a 2000 pound rover named Curiosity on Mars by lowering it from a FRIGGIN ROCKET CRANE. Then it took pictures and SENT them to us from over 200 million miles away. Seriously. Awesome. I digress.

When Telus Spark opened up in late 2011 one of their priorities was to have some programming aimed at the over 18 crowd, thus Adults Only Night was created. On the second Thursday of every month, the children get kicked out and the big kids take over. I’ve been to a couple now and they are fun. Each adult night has a unique theme. The staff and volunteers fill up the empty spaces with new, interactive exhibits. This past week was Playground Games. I played dodge ball, blew huge bubbles out on the terrace and told a stranger that her mother had loose morals. It was a sanctioned yo’ momma competition, don’t look at me like a monster.

This one wasn’t particularly heavy on the “science”, but was heavy on the me throwing balls at people. Past and future themes include Biology (I learned how to extract my own DNA), the Science of Youtube (there was a ton of Menthos and Diet Coke) and coming up are Fear and Risk, Surviving off the Grid and a greatest hits night. That one’s a top 10 of past Adult exhibits brought together for one night.

Check it out for yourself. The next Adult Only Night takes place on September 9th from 6 – 10. Check out sparkscience.ca for details. Do it for science!
