Girls on Decks is breaking beats all over your face
Are you aware that Calgary is home to Canada’s longest running all female DJ collective? Well we are. Girls on Decks (GOD) was kick started by Krista Thibodeau aka DJ Mollyfi sometimes dubbed Queen of Breaks. Krista’s DJ’ed from Whistler to Winnipeg but as a Calgarian, she’s super passionate about GOD and helping the local lady DJs get out there and get noticed.
Although yyc’s female DJ community appears to be growing at an exponential rate, Krista actually started GOD as a result of having a hard time booking gigs in an often male-dominated scene.
“At the time it seemed like unless you had huge knockers or your boyfriend was a club owner you weren’t getting booked despite your talent,” says Krista. “Since then, all I’ve ever wanted to do was showcase female talent, whether it be DJ’ing, MC’ing, breakdancing, graffiti; anything that was considered “taboo” for a girl to do. [We] had no idea that nine years later, we’d still be doing this and getting bigger.”
There are four other fabulous permanent members of the crew including Isis Graham, Blair Van Riesen, Adrenacrone and DJ Scarlett. Krista and her crew have put their heart and souls into keeping GOD alive. And not for nothing, like the title says, these are breaking beats all over your face!
“I have successfully helped many of my female friends break into the scene by providing them with support and making opportunities for them they may not have had in Calgary in the past,” says Krista. “Calgary needed a crew like GOD to inspire women out there that they can do it too.” And Calgary has embraced them with open arms and pumping fists. As previously mentioned, Krista as DJ’ed across a number of provinces, but her home is where her heart is and we’re pretty lucky GOD is here to live long and prosper.
GOD is throwing a big nine year anniversary bash at Dickens Pub on Saturday, September 15, which may just blow your mind and your ears.
But you can catch DJ Mollyfi (Krista) solo at a few venues around town over the next couple of weeks:
- Quincy’s Late Night lounge the fourth Friday of every month, next event August 24.
- The Bank Nightclub, Sunday, September 2, FUSED, official Calgary Pride wrap-up party
- Millenium Park, Saturday, September 14, Calgary Electronic Music Festival, Les Girls Stage.
