By Heart or By Hearsay
Think you could re-enact one of your favourite movies? I’m sure I could pull together a re-enactment of There Will Be Blood – I’d just have to slap on a moustache while dramatically yelling lines about oil rights and I’d be good to go. But how about a movie you haven’t seen in years, or one you’ve never seen before?
That’s the premise of By Heart or By Hearsay, one of a number of film related events at this year’s Choose Yer Own festival. The film festival, which takes place free of charge tonight (August 31st) at 10 p.m. at the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association, showcases “sweded” movies. All the film re-enactments are made by local teams, on no budget. “If you haven’t seen it since you were a kid, you just have to ask someone what it’s about or do it by memory,” said Dana Schloss, an organizer of the festival. By Heart or By Hearsay will be the first, but hopefully not last, incarnation of the “sweded” film fest, which Schloss hopes to make an ongoing thing.
The Choose Yer Own festival is in it’s fifth year. Curators choose events from those submitted on Facebook or their website, and compile a selection of events to take place all over the city during one weekend in August.
Other film related events include a Hunger Games water gun showdown, a reenactment of the E.T. bicycle ride, and a chance to make your own animations on bicycle wheels. If you don’t have any exciting plans lined up yet for the weekend, it’s time to Choose Yer Own!
