I have three delightfully nerdy events for you to enjoy this week. One of them is huge, another is record breaking and the third involves cosplay.
1. Tickets have gone on sale for the 2013 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, April 26 – 28 at the BMO Centre. Guests so far include: superhero Stan Lee, horror legend John Carpenter and a concert by “Weird Al” Yankovic. Tickets for the expo are available here but take note that the Weird Al show is a separate event. This year’s Expo is especially exciting for me because I’m the panel moderator team lead which means I get to host some really awesome panels and essentially ‘nerd the eff out’.
2. Telus Spark is closing out their first full year of ‘Adult’s Only’ nights with “World Records”. We can expect to see attempts made to build an insanely large ‘chain reaction’ machine, set the record for number of people simultaneously making Weiner dog balloon animals and baton twirling records with the Airdrie Skyhigh Twirlers. As with all Adult nights, there will be booze and no kids this Thursday. Doors open at 6 p.m. Check out one of my trips to the new science centre this last summer.
3. The folks at Otafest have created a mini version of their popular yearly anime festival and it’s called Aurora. It is a gala dinner being put on at the U of C’s downtown campus Saturday night. After dinner there will be a cosplay pageant, a dance and a voice acting Q&A with the night’s hosts Sam Vincent and Maryke Hendrikse who are veterans in the Vancouver voice work scene. Tickets are $60 at the door or $50 if you get them online. When do you get to bring your oversized sword to a fancy dinner?
