Calgary’s Folk Music Festival Unleashed just for us

The Festival Hall (looks kinda like a radio doesn’t it… hmmm)

Get your Birks out and let your hair down, because The Calgary Folk Music Festival (CFMF) is throwin’ a party, Saturday, January 26! They certainly have something to celebrate. After 33 years of wandering the earth (or maybe just Calgary) they’ve found a home of their very own. Located right in the core of Inglewood, CFMF has built some pretty epic new digs. Saturday’s celebration will mark the Grand Opening of their new space, deemed “Festival Hall”.

Festival Hall has been in the works for approximately eight years. Built on a lot of blood, sweat and dreams shared by CFMF’s wicked staff, Board members and eccentric volunteers, the Festival Hall is nothing short of Calgary’s next musical icon. Musicians can expect un-inhibited sound quality for performances and hippies can expect a sustainable wet-dream regarding the design.

What’s uber-fantasmal about The Hall, is that CFMF has answered your prayers of keeping the Festival alive year round. CFMF hopes to foster local musicians young and old in their new home, as well as provide an intimate space for visiting artists. CFMF Marketing Manager Matt Olah says that Calgary needs more music venues like Festival Hall to help grow Calgary’s music scene.

“[The Grand Opening] is the unveiling of purpose-built arts and culture centre in what is fast becoming an art and culture hub in Calgary – Inglewood,” says Matt. “It also means that Calgary has another live music venue. Any Calgary musician will tell you that there are never enough places for them to play, so it is a huge boon to both musicians and music fans alike.”

Well said Matt.

Although this weekend’s party is really about celebrating a home found, I think we should attend to thank CFMF for helping put Calgary’s music scene on the map. Regardless of whether you’re a Deadhead, metalhead or drum-and-bass-head, supporting this event will mean that you were part of Calgary’s cultural history.

Festival Hall Unleashed takes place on Saturday, January 26, located at 1215 10 Avenue S.E. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and show time starts at 2 p.m. This event is also FREE!
