Something good to spend your Christmas money on!

December 26, 2008

Over 1.1 BILLION people in the world do NOT have access to sanitary drinking water. 4,900 people per day die from water born illnesses – 90% of that being children under the age of 5. Pretty crazy to think about this seemingly most basic of basic needs not being available to so maybe people throughout the world.

In 2000, all of the world’s countries and leading development institutions agreed to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving the number of people without access to safe water to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015. The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Michel Camdessus has stated that no other MDG can be met unless we meet the water and sanitation targets.

There is some good news though!

Calgary based CAWST- (Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology) is doing some amazing things! Since its establishment in 2001, CAWST has touched the lives of over 1,125,000 people in more than 49 countries. They have established that a huge problem in creating infrastructure in developing countries is education. Often people do not understand the connection between unsanitary drinking water and illness. CAWST first starts with teaching communities about this connection and the importance of having sanitary water, and then works with them to build a water filtration systems to provide them access to sanitary water. On average, $33.00 dollars is all it takes to build a single filtration system- literally saving lives in the process.

Visit CAWST’s website for more information or to donate- or make a new years resolution to get even more involved and volunteer!

Riley “Gibb” Boland

December 19, 2008

The Source Skatepark opened to the Calgary public in June of 2002. One of the first kids I clearly remember squeezing his way in the door was a scrawny, Knox Godoy look-alike, by the name of Riley Boland. His hair was dyed black, his jeans were painted on, and his entourage included his rock ‘n’ roll dad, Doug Von Zipper, and Max Hurd. As he clamored to the front of the line, the first words out of his mouth were “…will this do for a helmet?”, flashing an English Bobby hat in front of our faces. He convinced his dad to tell us he was 16 so he wouldn’t have to wear elbow and knee pads, and was through the door before Doug could flip out his wallet. For the next four years Riley was a source p loc. If he wasn’t sneaking in, or scaling the fence, he could be found sleeping under the ramps, or in the wood room using the band saw and drill to create some random unskateable object.

2008 has been a good year for Riley as he’s been getting more and more exposure outside of Calgary, and with a recent part in Jeremy Elkin’s LO DEF, (clip below) and an interview with SkateNewSpot.com, I thought it was time we mention him on C.I.A..

Need a Christmas present idea for the comic nerd in your life?

December 17, 2008

This will get any super-nerds rocks off:

The movie was originally shot by Richard Doner simultaneously with the original Superman, but as the second film was winding up the studio dropped Doner and hired Richard Lester as the new director. Apparently the new Lester version was streamlined considerably to appease the studio and ended up being a bit disjointed because of it. An online movement eventually built up enough steam to get the original Doner version released in all its glory.

The end result is a perfect Christmas present for any comic nerd.

Track it down, it’ll be worth it.

Anyway, all my comic-nerd-ery aside, I noticed that in the scene where Superman shoots back a couple, New York sure looks a lot like Calgary and that Bar sure looks like the St. Louis…

(Sorry about the Weird Al overdub but this was the only footage I could find)

Also the Marlon Brando “Jor-El” scene shot at the Columbia ice fields (Cut down significantly in the original) is also in this version, check it here.

Godspeed!
