The Sled Island Bands

June 30, 2010

I hope everyone has their Sled Island Booklets!  Inside you can find, schedules, band info, festival info ,pictures plus much more!  Mark this on your itinerary

‘James Husband’

Performance Times: 11:45pm at the Palomino on July 1 & 11:00pm at the Marquee on July 2

James Huggins placed his mark on the Athens, GA music scene a long while ago, but it took 10
years on the road and relocating to Sweden to bring it all back home for his debut album. While
playing with various Elephant 6 Collective groups – of Montreal, Great Lakes, Essex Green,
Marshmallow Coast – Huggins kept his own recordings exclusively behind the scenes. But now,
he has finally opened the vaults of his underground recording project & stepped out as a
songwriter & solo artist with the release of James Husband’s A Parallax I. (230 Publicity)

Kingsland Farmer’s Market

June 30, 2010

A new farmer’s market will be added to the local landscape in the SW community of Kingsland. As a lifelong resident of this quiet neighborhood, I am quite excited to have my very own farmer’s market just a few blocks from home. The market will be housed on the former Shaganappi dealership at 7711 Macleod Trail S. A wide variety of vendors will include Pearson’s Berry Farm, Rustic Sourdough Bakery, Community Natural Foods and many more.

The Kingsland Farmer’s Market will hold its grand opening on July 7th. For more info, head on over to www.kingslandfarmersmarket.com.

Shot at the Dark – Fisticuffs

June 30, 2010

The strength in words is something described throughout time, with “the pen is mightier than the sword”. This power has changed the world for better and for worse. One word can change the way you feel about someone or something. One word could make you feel something new, or something old.

In our language we have hundreds of words to describe similar things, with words like love or hate. On the contrary, we have words like Heaven and hell, describing places with such distinct imagery, even though we have never seen them before.

Jordan Kurtz, with his performance in this week’s episode, brings this imagery into question with his chorus reading, “where will you be, when you die?”. Something terrible to imagine, but a topic of discussion based on the fact that you undoubtedly can’t control the definition to the word, Life.

Jordan is a Saskatoon resident who has made a pass or two through this great city, and both times we have had the pleasure of shaking hands and taking about what makes our worlds go round. With his new album “the wheat weather”, its without a doubt, that music is his passion, and stories are his life.

Please enjoy this week’s episode of SHOT AT THE DARK, with our friend Jordan Kurtz:

Thank you so much to Jordan for being part of the show.

Thank you everyone for watching.

SHOT AT THE DARK is produced by Nicole Irene Dyck, Reuben Bullock, Justin Huculak, and Brock Mitchell

The Sled Island Bands

June 29, 2010

We all need to get rowdy sometimes in our life, so why not get rowdy this week at Sled Island?   You will not be disappointed with this pick.

‘Ty Segall’

Performance Time : 12:00am at the Royal Canadian Legion on June 30 & 4:00pm at the Republik on July 1

On the heels of two critically acclaimed solo albums, Segall holed up in a basement studio with Mike Donovan of the SicAlps in late 2009 and early 2010 to come up with Melted. It’s a carefree yet precise balance of acoustic and electric elements. Distorted echo and thunder mix together with enough clean guitar lines and addictive choruses to deliver an album that recalls the ’60s without sounding like anything created during that decade. Time melts away, vision melts away, minds melt away. Get Melted! (230 Publicity)

The Sled Island Bands

June 28, 2010

The Sled Island week has arrived and there couldn’t be more entertainment in this beautiful city!  Be sure to grab your Sled Island pass at http://www.sledisland.com/buy-passes.html.

First on our recommendation list is Toronto’s indie rock band ‘RatTail’

Performance Time:  3:00pm at Local Library on July 1

After years of sneaking into bars underage to see local indie rock shows Jasmyn Burke started writing music on her own. After the break up of her local darlings all girl group Hot Monogamy she began showcasing some of her new acoustic songs to Ryan Mounsey who had produced Hot Monogamys early recordings and released them on his now defunct Record label Haggard Beast. Together they decided to add a drummer to the songs that were slowly getting louder and more dense. Mounsey recruited long time drum coloborator and noise sculpturist Jesse Frank Matthews and Rattail was born. Soon after the band recorded there yet to be released full length with James Anderson at 6 Nassau Studios in Kensington Market. There first official release was the self produced basement 7 inch “George Mounsey E.P” on Unfamiliar Records. After some of the 6 Nassau demos leaked on the internet and spread to various blogs quickly “Said The Gramaphone” declared one of the demos number 29 on there 75 best on 2009 list. (230 Publicity)

What a Weekend…

June 27, 2010

Sometimes I wonder how I got myself into this mess of shooting the most random things. Each so amazing on their own, but to describe them at the same time makes me seem a little crazy.

I hope you had an amazing weekend!

Chow Down in Cowtown – Sorrentino’s

June 27, 2010

Chow Down in Cowtown is an (almost!) weekly account of Calgary’s most awesome eats from Ceci n’est pas un food blog.

Sorrentino's

Strangely, even though Sorrentino’s is just at the foot of my neighbourhood, my family has only been there maybe once years ago, often opting to go to Misato instead. Recently, however, Sorrentino’s has completely revamped itself, bringing on chef Giuseppe di Gennaro of Capo to create a more family-friendly (read: less expensive) menu that still stays true to its Italian roots. I don’t know if the interior has been redone as well, but the restaurant now features an open kitchen, and the main dining room offers floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Sarcee Trail mountains of loam in preparation for the construction of the West LRT. Despite the fact that it was late last Sunday, there were still many families lingering from their Father’s Day feasts, so we were given a booth off to the side.

Minus the Bear live in Calgary!

June 24, 2010

Get ready Calgary because we have an awesome ticket giveaway for you.  The Seattle rock group, Minus the Bear, will be making their way to Calgary on June 27 at the Republik.  You wanna join in with them?  Email justin@calgaryisawesome.com with your name, number and why ‘Curb your Enthusiasm’ is the best show around and you will be entered into our ticket giveaway draw!

Founded in 2001, Minus the Bear earned immediate attention with their distinctive spastic prog-pop hybrid, all serrated rhythms, swirling synths, and guitarist Dave Knudson’s multi-layered, pedal-hopping acrobatics.  Prolific from the start, the band let loose with series of EPs and albums, each drawing escalating acclaim and a host of new fans.  2007’s “PLANET OF ICE” was followed by the band’s most intensive touring thus far, repeatedly traveling the US, as well as Europe, Australia, and Japan.  (Union Press Release)
