Informal Attire collection hits Calgary
The first time I met Dave Boyce was about 10 years ago at the Banff Skatepark. In my sagged out jeans and scraggly ponytail, I can recall earnestly trying to learn rock and rolls on the corner quarterpipe, failing desperately as the coping snagged my trucks. While I was busy chasing my board across the tennis court, a car pulled up and out of it appeared a massive, domineering soul of a man. His presence alone, board in hand, stopped skaters in their tracks as anticipation rose knowing that this stranger was going to fuck our park up. And he did. While the rest of us lollygaggers sat on our boards and peered at the mountain peaks.
Dave Boyce is no stranger to the skate and snowboard world. This North Van entrepreneur started his first company ”Payday Slacks” at the mere age of 21, turning his living room into a silkscreening facility. His work has not gone unnoticed as an apparel designer with meticulous attention to detail and design trends. Having lived and breathed skateboarding and its’ industry for most of his life, this artist truly understands the conceptual idea of what skate and snowboarder’s want to see in a collection, and his success continues to grow as a Canadian designer.
His latest line, Informal Attire, stemming from an Asian Proverb as the identity for the brand, has two crossed brush strokes symbolizing crisis, one brush being danger, the other opportunity. The manifest behind this is, in a crisis to always be aware of danger, but recognize opportunity. This idea is a constant throughout the Informal Philosophy to always be aware of your surroundings as these surroundings create the image you see and project. Pro snowboarder Chris Dufficy is part of the Informal family, as well as the likes of artist Jeremy Shaw and skateboarder Geoff Dermer.
Informal Attire’s luxury skateboard collection is now available at The Source.
