“This photo was taken in early February on a gorgeous winter afternoon in downtown Calgary.  The Suncor Towers are an example of the amazing and unique architecture to be found throughout our wonderful city, and they were looking particularly gorgeous bathed in the late afternoon sunlight.”

David Smith, Calgarian and photographer

“This photo was taken of me on a bridge going over the Bow River with my friend’s two dogs. I love going for walks here because the river is so gorgeous, but there was something about it being the first day of spring that made everything seem that much more beautiful.”

Payge Saretsky is a full time student who is in love with dogs and Calgary.

In Focus: Apocalypse Sunrise

“I had just walked into work the morning of December 4th when I noticed the beginnings of a beautiful Calgary sunrise outside the office window. The office is on the 34th floor of Bow Valley Square, so it has a great view of downtown and to the south. It’s a view that I love and have photographed a number of times, although never with a result quite like this. I stood at the window and captured this shot with my iPhone as the sun came up over the city. You can see the reflection of the fluorescent office lights behind me in the window and I love the atmosphere that the exhaust from the towers downtown adds to the photo. The result looks a little bit eerie and apocalyptic.”

In Focus: Heading to Wonderland

“As a self declared “skyscraper geek,” The Bow building has been a personal favorite to watch rise into the skyline of Calgary. With the completion of Juan Plensa’s art piece “Wonderland” I had to go down with my family and check it out. I think it is a great contribution to the art in our downtown core, and the ability to walk inside of it gives it an interactivity that is usually lacking in our public art. The Bow and Wonderland: two new icons on the Calgary landscape.”

Aaron Stayner, urbanist and skyscraper geek

“This was taken two weeks ago from the footbridge on Prince’s Island Park on my walk downtown to my office in Art Central. I like to take photos on my way to work in the morning; it is a reason to slow down and enjoy the morning rather than rushing into work mode so quickly.”

Janine Vangool is publisher/editor/designer of UPPERCASE, a quarterly magazine for the creative and curious.

“This photo was taken at Heritage Park during Christmas brunch with my family. I first was going to take a landscape shot of the old buildings, but then saw the fence and thought it might make a cool foreground.”

Rachel Hamilton is a second generation Calgarian who loves Calgary’s urban vibe and rural heart.

In Focus: Hotel heights

My son and I were leaving the Calgary Tower and ended up having to exit the +15 due to some construction. As we were heading down to street level I noticed the Palliser and how the dull lighting of this day gave the hotel a high contrast value. Being across the street I wasn’t able to frame the entire building in one shot so I created this highly detailed composite shot with 15 photos. This is what creates the fish-eye effect. The Fairmont Palliser Hotel is one of my favorite buildings in Calgary!

“This photo was taken at the CN rail tracks by the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Habitat. I’m always on the look out for natural but high contrast textures for my textile art work with natural dyes and hand stitch. Winter has some of the best details for that.”

Arlee Barr, Calgary artist

“I’ve been a huge fan of Calgary’s old architecture since attending ACAD in the 1980′s. I jumped at the chance to enter the King Edward School for the recent 100th We Should Know Each Other event. Since there isn’t much old architecture left in Calgary, this gave me the opportunity to tour the entire school, inside and out, and capture images before the building is renovated.”

“I picked up a new hobby taking photos with my iPhone 4S. I snapped this photo one day at sundown while strolling through Bridgeland park with my wife and newborn. The overhanging branch framed downtown nicely and the contrast from the leaves and sky made this shot pop. The unfortunate thing is that winter is coming. No!”
