We’re Getting Into Some Whisky Business!

Chivas 18 Gold Signature Blended Scotch Whiskey

Bourbon, single malt, scotch whisky… right down to The Bourbon Room at the new National 10, it seems whisky is on the rise in Calgary! Our friends at Chivas Regal have noticed it too! They’ve released Chivas 18 in limited edition packaging by Pininfarina, designer of the famed Ferrari, Fiat and Rolls-Royce – and it’s available exclusively in Alberta.

We put the whisky to the test with a panel of 5 local whisky enthusiasts.

Packaging: Chivas 18 comes in a dark navy box. Inside is a blue metallic container, mostly round but coming to a point at the end. Chivas 18 Pininfarina is imprinted in gold, blue and silver on the front of the container. Inside the container is a dark amber liquid boasting 85 flavours in every drop.  Read more

Stories from Our Streets – Meet Jacques Godin

You may have passed by him in the streets of Inglewood, or have had the privilege to be served by him on your last flight across Canada.  You may not know this happy-go-lucky guy with the permanent grin, but he’s probably one of Calgary’s best secret ambassadors.

Jacques & his Favorite Paddle. And no, it’s not called “Rosebud”

This is Jacques Godin, 16-year Air Canada veteran of the skies, guru of the positive mindset and one of Calgary’s most accomplished paddlers in several water sports.  If it floats, he’ll find a way to propel it through the waves that would make most waterfowl envious. Well known among the local paddling community (canoe, outrigger, voyageur, dragon boat, etc.), most people would usually have some sort of Jacques story they keep in mind. Yes, those stories are often funny and peppered with the Godin charm, but each and every one always seem to have a lesson to impart.  For fellow paddlers, it’s great points on ways to improve just a bit more each time the blade hits the water, but little do they know that it’s all based on a personal philosophy to always bring out the best in others no matter what the setting.

Don’t toss it, learn how to fix it at Repair Cafe

COURTESY/ REPAIR CAFE CALGARY

Sustainability isn’t hard to achieve if you know where to look

It’s time to rethink waste.

In the ever-growing, ever-changing, throw-away-just-to-buy-it-again consumer culture, waste is one thing we have too much of.

“It’s a bad cycle,” says Steve Haywood, co-founder and marketing co-ordinator of Repair Cafe Calgary, a new sustainability initiative that aims to engage consumers in socially conscious behaviour and, as the name suggests, repair their broken goods.

“Too many times people are just throwing (their stuff) away and buying it again, and it’s wasteful and wastes a lot of money.”

Repair Cafe Calgary provides the space, tools and expertise of dedicated volunteers for people who want to learn how to repair their broken items while also socializing with neighbours and people around them.

The rule of thumb: if it’s in your house and it’s portable, they can probably find someone to fix it. Read more
